Samsung Freestyle+ refreshes the portable projector idea with AI setup
Ahead of CES 2026, the portable Freestyle+ nearly doubles brightness to 430 ISO lumens and adds AI OptiScreen auto keystone, focus and wall calibration to Samsung's rotating design.

430 ISO lumens is the headline number on The Freestyle+, the portable projector Samsung announced ahead of CES 2026: nearly twice the brightness of the previous generation, according to the company's release. The cylindrical, rotating design of earlier Freestyle models stays. What Samsung says is new is a brighter image and smarter screen optimisation.
The Freestyle+ is not trying to be a dedicated theatre projector. It is built for people who move a projector between rooms, point it at a wall or ceiling and start watching without a setup process.
AI OptiScreen does the placement work
Samsung's announcement describes AI OptiScreen as a set of tools for automatic picture adjustment: 3D auto keystone, real-time focus, screen fit and wall calibration. The aim is to make the projector less sensitive to imperfect placement and imperfect surfaces.
That is the right problem for a portable projector to solve. A portable will rarely sit in an ideal position, so setup automation matters more here than on a ceiling-mounted theatre unit. Samsung also brings a TV-software advantage. If the Freestyle+ feels like a familiar Samsung display in miniature, it can appeal to buyers who would never read a projector setup guide.
430 lumens buys a casual big screen
Twice the previous brightness is useful for portability, but 430 ISO lumens still describes a casual large-screen device, not a replacement for a high-brightness home-cinema projector. Portable projectors are judged on different terms: fast setup, flexible placement, smart TV convenience and a picture that holds up in the places people actually use one. Reference contrast and perfect HDR are not the goal.
The risk is that convenience features become a mask for limited brightness or contrast, a common weakness in compact projection. The tests that count are focus consistency, keystone quality, speaker performance, app support and how usable the image remains in normal ambient light, checked repeatedly across bedroom walls, quick outdoor sessions, casual gaming and small-group streaming. Battery or accessory assumptions should also be clear if the portable story depends on add-ons.
The Freestyle+ does not need to beat a theatre projector. It needs to make casual projection easy enough that people keep using it after the novelty fades.
